Thief Alert: Their New Tactic

Friday, August 17th, 2007

There have been reports of many home burglaries in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Tulsan police have discovered that burglars and thieves have a new simple tactic up their sleeves: disarming the home security system.

The burglars first see to it that no one is home by knocking on the doors. When they’re sure that the house is empty of its residents, they go around the property to find the electric box and cut the wires. The power is cut and your home security system is disarmed, leaving your home free to be ripped off of valuables.

The police department are advising everyone to take extra precautions and backup security plans. A battery back up that lasts for more at least 4 hours and a cell phone back up are a great help. And, as usual, always lock the doors, windows, garage, and sheds. Keep your home well lit, and don’t leave anything outside your home that will potentially help a burglar or thief enter your home.

Music As the Alarm

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Pioneer introduces its latest sound system that can act as a home security system because of its additional feature: motion sensors.

MT01 Sound SystemThe MT-01 Power Line Sound System allows you to enjoy music all throughout your house! Instead of using conventional speaker wires, the MT-01 uses household electricity lines to transmit sounds to any part of your home. You can plug up to six specially-designed Power Line Network speakers into electric sockets and have fun listening to music.

The sound system has a plain but stylish appearance, and can be controlled by remote control. You can also connect your MP3 player, iPod, computer, or any audio system with it. Multi-room playback from two different sources is also possible with MT-01! For example, music from you MP3 player can be played in one room, while music from another source can be played in the next room.

The most astonishing feature of the MT-01 sound system, however, is the motion sensor in the small speaker of the sound system. By detecting motion in the room, the system will automatically start playing your music. The only disadvantage we can see with this feature is that we’ll have to be ready for sudden music brought about by a simple vase falling or by a dog’s wagging tail.

The MT-01 will be released at the end of September. More information on the MT-01 Power Line Sound System at Pioneer.

The “Smart Pillbox” To Remind You of Your Medication

Monday, August 13th, 2007

For elderly patients and patients with chronic medical conditions, remembering to take medications can become a bother to the memory. Nevertheless, taking the medications are prescribed and for the better.

InforMedix has fortunately created a new interactive “smart pillbox” that will help remind patients to take their medications. This new creation is called the Med-eMonitor.

Med-eMonitor

The Med-eMonitor alerts the patient with a musical chime when it’s time to take their medicine. It also informs the patient on how to take the medication, and asks the patient questions about their health. It also records the date and time when the medicine drawer has been opened.

In the event that the patient takes the wrong pill or medicine, or in cases where he or she forgets to take her medication, the Med-eMonitor will send an email, a text message, or a fax to a relative or loved one, or to a call center through which a health professional will be notified. The Med-eMonitor also has a questionnaire section for patient feedback, and a “to do” list to help the patients do the most critical tasks first.

Emergency medical service will be notified in minutes by the call center if necessary.

Home Security Funny Article

This would be a funny sight if it had really happened.

Nevertheless, let this be a reminder for us all to take home security seriously. What if the owner really did shoot the intruders? If the intruders got away, they would target another house to steal from, right?

Home Security System For Domestic Violence Victims

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Domestic violence victims don’t usually win in court and have their way for a safe life with their family. They face imminent danger at any time.

The AWARE program was created for the purpose of protecting these victims from the danger and violence they had once experienced. Sponsored by ADT, the program donates and offers installation of electronic security systems for free in the homes of domestic violence victims who are threatened by the possible dangers that might happen again.

ADT has stated that there are qualifications to be in the program. To have a security system installed, the victims must have a restraining order against the attacker. At the very least, the victims must have attempted to get one. They must also agree to testify in court if the attacker was arrested as a result of the security system.

The main security device of the AWARE program is an alarm pendant that the victim can carry with her always. She can just press the button when an attack comes. The pendant will automatically send a signal to ADT, which will then notify the authorities.

It is estimated that around 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by a partner each year. While the AWARE program doesn’t entirely solve all the victim’s fear and problems, it can at least give them some comfort and peace of mind.

DOs and DON’Ts Before Taking Off

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

It’s not the end of summer yet, and there are still people taking off for relaxing and fun vacations. As August is still part of the peak season for burglary crimes, reminders on important DOs and DON’Ts are in order.

DO!

  • Take pictures of every room in your house. Include valuable items and jewelery. These pictures will serve as proof for your insurers when you find anything missing when you get back home.
  • Permanently mark valuable items with your postcode. You can use a commercial marking product. Keep a record of the make, model, and serial number, too. If you also want to safeguard large valuable items, you can refer to www.immobilise.com for some help.
  • Don’t forget to leave contact numbers to your neighbor who’s going to be watching your property for you.
  • It might be a good idea to have important papers and documents with a good friend or family, if not a safe.
  • Inquire about your insurance and make sure you are updated on it.
  • Remember to stop subscriptions or have your neighbor check on your mail and garbage. Remember to secure your home and activate your alarm system, too.

DON’T!

  • Close your curtains. It’s like telling everybody that no one is home.
  • Hide your jewelery in places that you consider smart but not so for the burglar. The toilet cistern and the hems of curtains are no longer secrets for burglars, for example, are no secret places for burglar.
  • Put your home address on your luggage. You’re basically saying that you’re on vacation and your home is free for the steal.
  • Leave bank statements, diaries, or bills around the house. The burglar might get away with identity theft, too, and that’ll be another rough rock in your shoe.
  • Forget to lock all doors and windows, and the garage, shed, and other outbuildings.
