Direct From Crime Experts

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

More tips from crime experts are available for homeowners who want to avoid burglaries and break-ins. Police departments are also advising residents to be more careful and to take home security more seriously.

Crime experts state out that burglaries don’t always happen at night. Burglaries actually occur more often during daytime! Glass block windows are also being recommended. Basement windows are almost usually the entry point and so homeowners may want to focus on securing that part.

Motion lighting is also a great deterrent. Light makes the burglar think that someone could just be watching him/her.

Break-ins are common usually when the resident is far from the main floor of the house. Be sure to lock all doors, windows, and any openings at all times, especially when there’s no one present in the room.

Home Security and Insurance

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Regarding home insurance, it is advisable that homeowners fit their homes with home security and do it correctly. Theft and a break-in in a home that is not secured could result in a home insurance claim. It is being stressed that many home insurance policies can be invalidated if a theft occurs in an unsecured home.

Tighter security is also necessary this summer, for summer is the peak season for thieves. Remember to lock all external doors and windows and to activate your home security system every time you leave the house.

NBFAA Offers Home Security Tips For the Summer

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Yes, summer is here! But it seems we really can’t relax that much because summer is the busiest burglar season. Mostly, it’s because many folks take long vacations at other places. In response to this report, the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association gives out home security tips to help you keep your home and valuables safe.

The main advise that the NBFAA gives is that we should discourage the thieves from choosing our home to break into.

Thieves prefer to break into homes that are unoccupied, and so it would do well for you to keep your house looking like there are still people in there even though all of you are on vacation. Using timers on your lights, radio, and other appliances is a great idea. You can also ask your neighbors to take keep your mail and subscriptions and take out your trash cans on trash day. Leaving your car parked in the driveway is also a good idea. You can also ask your neighbor to park in your driveway from time to time.

Take time to take care of your lawn before going, too. Mow the lawn and ask your neighbors to take care of it for you if you’re going to be gone for a long time.

Basic protection still applies, of course. Make sure you locked all windows and doors, and don’t forget your garage doors. Adding deadbolt locks would also be a good idea. Don’t neglect to trim the trees and bushes, too, to give the thieves less hiding places.

Get help from your neighbors and friends, too, to watch over your house from time to time. Inform them of how long you’ll be gone, when you’ll be back, and what to do in case emergencies happen. Leave a house key and a contact number to someone you trust, and you can also inform the police if you want.

Home security systems are also on the list to keep your home secure. Have your security company monitor your home while you’re away, and make sure that whoever you give access to enter your home knows how to activate and deactivate the security system to prevent false alarms.

Police Gearing Things Up For Home Security

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Police forces are elevating measures to secure our homes.

In Australia, the NSW police plans to raise awareness into building site crime and home security at their Sidney Home Show. they will be providing a free resource kit with crime prevention tips and free advise. The police have also developed some materials to help builders and homeowners reduce building site theft and vandalism, and the associated costs.

Theft prevention tips include the timing of the delivery of expensive items, provision of appropriate security fencing, cooperating with the local councils for the proper use of the utilities, notifying neighbors for any suspicious behaviors, and permanently labeling the items in the site.

Log on to www.nsw.police.com.au for more information about the Building Site Theft Reduction Kit.

Meanwhile, in Orlando, the police force is offering home security inspections for free. Residents should take this opportunity to have their homes checked and make some changes to make sure their homes are really secure.

Lots to gain and nothing to lose!

7 Small Tips on Automobile and Physical Security

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007
  • It’s better to have your keys out and ready before leaving your house or building to avoid giving criminals the opportunity to sneak up on you when you’re fumbling through your bag for the keys.
  • When leaving shopping malls or stores, be on constant alert. Criminals know that you’re carrying cash, credit cards, or anything valuable.
  • Better not to use ATM’s at night or at unsafe places.
  • Observe your surroundings. Watch carefully for any suspicious person that could be watching you. If you feel like someone’s watching you, walk past your car and give the impression that you don’t own anything that’s worth stealing.
  • As much as possible, keep one arm and one hand free to ensure that you can move freely and faster when an attack comes.
  • Lock the door after entering the car. Do this even before you put the key into the ignition, just to make sure.
  • Don’t pick up hitchhikers.
