It Takes A Thief
By: Sean Hattaway
Burglars are professionals, plain and simple. Stealing is what they do
for a living. This puts them at an advantage because they think of things
in a way that the everyday person doesn’t. They can sometimes anticipate
the types of obstacles that they might encounter and know ways around them.Â
Think about the word professional. Someone who’s a professional is usually
good at what they do; they’re the expert. They possess a criminal mind.Â
It takes a thief mindset in order to keep one step ahead of them.Â
There is no such thing as a fool-proof home security system. . If a thief
has enough time and the right tools, they can get around any kind of system
that they come across. Although some criminals might be deterred by an alarm
system and move on to a property that has none, not all of them will. Some
will do what they need to do to get inside. But there are many things that
you can do to counter the actions of a thief and hopefully stop them in the
act or deter them from attempting a break-in. One of the things is to learn
more about who they are. What makes a thief?
First of all, regardless of the type of burglar you’re dealing with, you’ll
find that they’re all destructive. They don’t care how much damage they
do to your home to get to what they want:Â your money and/or your jewelry.Â
The first type of burglar is one who takes advantage of opportunity. This
is usually a petty criminal. If there’s a door left open, he’ll walk in.Â
One of the most common burglaries associated with this type of individual
is one that occurs when a garage door is left open. This is an invitation
for an opportunity burglar to come right in.
The next type of burglar is one that is usually looking to get high or drunk.Â
They break in, rifle through your things as fast as they can and grab what’s
available. All they need is enough cash to get them their next fix. Typically,
these types of burglars don’t linger. They bolt as soon as they what they’re
looking for.Â
Our third burglar is about one step above the first two. They also tend
to be a little more dangerous. This is because they know more about their
craft and commit the crime in a more premeditated fashion. These are individuals
that have thought through their actions and know what they’re after. They
generally know where to find what they’re looking for and they also know
the worth of certain items.Â
The last type of burglar is a rare breed. These are the true professionals.Â
These people tend to operate as part of a ring. They are looking for a specific
item and know how to track it down. In some cases, they might have connections
with someone at an insurance agency that will be their accomplice in locating
certain these articles. On the other hand, they may be the types to go in
and strip a place bare. As mentioned above however, the first three types
are more common and are what you should look out for. Now that you have
a better idea of their mindset, you can better protect your home and belongings
against them. Remember it takes a thief mindset to keep on step ahead of
them.
