Home Protection
"Safeguarding the Outside
of Your House"
By: Sean Hattaway
Most times when people think of home protection and security, they think
only of alarm systems that are installed inside. This alarm system is merely
one component of many that are necessary to properly secure your home’s perimeter.Â
There are just as many aspects to consider on the outside as well as on the
inside.
For starters, the shrubs and trees that provide the privacy that you like
so much may actually be a leading factor to make your house a target to a
burglar. To decrease the chances of becoming a target you may want to consider
pruning the greenery around your doors and windows so that you offer to hiding
spot to a thief. Thieves like the dark, so be sure they don’t get it.
Along those lines, it is also important to keep your house well lit. Although
statistics show that most break-ins occur during the daytime does not mean
you shouldn’t give thought to lighting your home at night. Areas such as
doorways and other dark spots, like in between your house and a neighbor’s,
should be lit. A popular option to go with is a light on a motion sensor.Â
It will turn on only when it senses movement in its proximity.Â
One area that people sometimes overlook is the shed in the backyard. This
should always be locked, if it isn’t already. Unlocked sheds means that
a burglar will have access to anything that is in there, and in some cases,
that means they can grab a ladder if it’s in there. With that ladder, they
can now attempt entry through a second floor window. Keep the shed locked
with a padlock.
Another important consideration when beefing up security on the outside of
your home is your local neighborhood watch association. All across the country
there are groups like this that take an active interest in their neighborhood
and make an effort to lessen the odds of burglaries. This means that someone
else is looking out for suspicious activity around your home, just as you
would watch out for theirs. One good turn deserves another. Just think,
if you stop a thief from breaking into your next door neighbor’s house, you
effectively decrease the odds of that same person breaking into your house.Â
If your area doesn’t have one you can seek to create one. Otherwise, be
sure to join one. Home security starts with the home, but it also extends
outward. Be sure to take an active role in keeping your home safe. Home
protection starts today.
