Home Burglary
"Additional Prevention Tips to Prevent Home Burglary"
By: Sean Hattaway
In the United States, a home burglary occurs every 11 seconds. In addition,
70 percent of the burglaries happen during the daytime. Although these are
pretty harrowing statistics, there are tips you can take advantage of to
build up your protection against break-ins. Alarm systems are part of the
overall home security system, but there are other things you can do as well.
When burglars case out houses to break into, they are primarily looking
for two things; an invitation and a quick getaway. One of the big things
you never want to do is leave your key in the car. This is a perfect example
of an invitation. If a burglar sees this, they will accept this invitation
to enter your home next if the house key is on the same set. Along these
lines, be sure to always close your garage door as soon as you’ve come home
or gone out. This is another “welcome” sign to a burglar.
A big no-no is leaving any windows open or doors unlocked when you go out.
One of the main ways a burglar obtains access to a home is through the front
door. The second way is through a window. So why chance it? Even if you’re
going to the store for a few minutes, it’s important to remember to take
these small precautions. They might be enough to deter a thief.
If you’re expecting a delivery and you go out, never leave a note saying
where you are or how long you’ll be out. The same thing goes for answering
machine messages. If a potential thief calls to see when someone is home
and hears that you’re on vacation for a week, this is an open invitation
for them to come in and do some damage.
Sliding glass doors are a potential hot spot in the home for a break-in.
If you have sliding glass doors, be sure to pick up and install additional
locks. Some good ideas are a wooden pole that is placed in the track or a
key lock at the top of the frame. Also, any other doors that have flimsy
locks must be replaced in order to deter an intruder from getting inside.
Now may be a good time to inspect the locks on your home and see what kind
of condition they’re in.
Lastly, if you’re home has a basement, see to it that the windows are carefully
locked or barred. Sometimes homeowners overlook this area, but it can serve
as a point of entry to a burglar. Again, having an alarm system professionally
installed is a great start, but remember that there are other tools at your
disposal to use in protecting yourself and your home from a potential home
burglary.
